 UK illegal tobacco market highlights for June.

M&S  News – Birmingham

The former owner of M&S News in Birmingham has been ordered to pay £228,737 through a POCA order or face two years in prison after pleading guilty to 10 offences in relation to selling illegal tobacco. 6,328 packs of cigarettes and 692 packs of RYO were found hidden at the store, and, following a further conviction in October 2015, JTI removed the shops tobacco gantry.

Euro Shop – Wolverhampton

The owner of Euro Shop in the Whitmore Reans area of Wolverhampton has been jailed for two years and two months for the evasion of £99,302 in duty. The store was raided seven times between August 2014 and November 2015 with tobacco products found in hidden containers, fake walls, under floorboards and in the upstairs flat.

Supersam – Nottingham

The former shopkeeper of Nottingham-based, Supersam has been ordered to pay costs of £585 and undertake 40 hours of community work after Trading Standards, assisted by a sniffer dog, found 640 packs of illegal cigarettes worth £3,331 at the store.

Costless – Gloucester

A Gloucester shopkeeper has been told that they will need to send back £13,000 of the former Costless retailer’s criminal profits within three months or face jail for 10 months. The shop had been found selling illegal tobacco four times in 2016.

Burcharesti – Blackpool

Bucharesti’s owner has been given a 12 month community order for selling illegal tobacco products in Blackpool. During a Trading Standards test purchase a man was sold three packets of illegal RYO which led to the shop being raided and 144 packs of illegal tobacco (including Mayfair) being found.
