The Tonight’s Tea lines have received phenomenal feedback from both retailers and consumers, with SPAR having exclusivity over Meat Market branding within the UK, helping to deliver double digit growth in this category.

Irwin’s Bakery have worked closely alongside A.F. Blakemore to develop our range of SPAR own label round cakes, and supported this strong launch across the estate. Irwin’s are a family business with a transparent business plan, with a focus on being competitive in the market and ensuring retailers generate excellent profits.
Impulse Supplier of the Year
Mars Wrigley Confectionery have a positive, collaborative relationship with A.F. Blakemore and have delivered significant growth through a joint partnership. Despite challenges with supply on pouches due to factory issues, sales continue to grow at 26%. Mars always assist with the implementation of range reviews across the estate to help increase retail sales and strongly support Local Marketing Partners.
Best Fresh Retailer
SPAR Port Talbot have been trading for 4 years, moving into a newly built retail unit and transforming it into a modern, 2000 square foot convenience store. They started out with 8 metres of fresh space and 1 metre of food-to-go and one year after opening, completed a minor refit which increased their fresh participation by a further 2.5 metres. The Tonight’s Tea range added approximately 100 fresh lines alongside a range of food-to-go options, offering customers a choice of freshly prepared food, such as chicken curry and pizza served in slices, halves or whole portions.
Best SPAR Brand Advocate
SPAR Tattenhall are a strong advocate of the SPAR Brand, both within the shop and in their community, sponsoring local festivals and donating monies raised through the carrier bag levy to local groups. They participated in the Tonight’s Tea trial, offering in-store sampling to customers over busy shopping times, encouraging them to try and buy these SPAR exclusive lines. Tattenhall has high SPAR Brand participation, with 30% of products in-store being SPAR Brand.
Best Independent Forecourt
SPAR Sleaford have been on the same site at Holdingham since 1972 and have been with SPAR for 7 years. The Hockmeyer family’s view is that continually developing your services, range and ideas will result in a successful, prosperous business. They are currently trading 7.5% up year on year, constantly striving to find ways to combat falling tobacco and alcohol sales by strengthening other areas such as fresh and food-to-go. There is no doubt that SPAR Sleaford’s continued emphasis on development, marketing and training is helping to continually increase their turnover.
Best Multi Site Forecourt
Euro Garages Holtspur have put exceptional effort into their high standards and this has been reflected in the sales the store are generating. When the store initially changed from a Sainsbury’s to a SPAR, they were finding it difficult to win customers confidence back. The team worked closely with Blakemore Trade Partners and analysed the store category by category, implementing various changes, including adding premium lines throughout the store. Offering customers the products they need at a great price, along with excellent customer service resulted in them winning regular customers back.
Best Use of Investment
SPAR Port Talbot made a considerable investment 4 years ago when they developed a new unit into a modern 2000 square foot convenience store. 2018 has seen Port Talbot undergo its 3rd refit in just over 3 years, including additional floor space and a Post Office. Weekly sales are now averaging £38,000 per week thanks to a better shopping experience, and customers benefiting from an increased range of chilled products, which in turn is increasing their spend in other departments. SPAR Port Talbot intend on developing the store even further over the next 6 months.
Best People Development
SPAR London Road have created an environment in which staff who perform at a high standard are rewarded and also benefit from increased training and a more challenging role. The store is operational for 22 hours a day so it is essential that the team are well-trained and motivated to maintain high standards. An inspiring award entry that received a unanimous win from the Judges.
Roadchef Strensham South have executed best practice in terms of innovation, range, and layout. The exterior of the store is striking, with an impressive whole width entrance enticing customers in. Strensham South offers a state of the art shopping experience with a dynamic look and feel, providing outstanding customer service alongside competitive pricing.
The Big Investment
SPAR Gabalfa have been a family-run retail business for 25 years. The King family were chosen based on the detailed business plan they provided, demonstrating how the investment would be used to drive sales and enhance the consumer offer. With a number of competitors moving into the local vicinity the store has come under pressure. The big investment will enable the introduction of a hot coffee offer, food to go and the new tonights tea range with a forecasted sales increase of over 11%.
White’s of Calver joined SPAR in 2002 and have continued to grow and develop the business ever since. In August 2013, Edward White opened the first SPAR Farm Shop, selling a wide range of convenience lines as well as a range of locally produced foods. SPAR Calver now boasts an impressive Daily Deli range as well as an Insomnia coffee outlet. 2017 saw the store fight off local competition by developing the forecourt, upgrading it to the same look and feel as the Farm Shop. These stores combined are currently taking on average £60,000 per week.
