JTI fires Burnley retailer

JTI has removed its tobacco gantry from Sycamore Stores in Anglesey Avenue following a successful prosecution at Burnley Magistrates’ Court for selling counterfeit cigarettes and RYO.

Charlie Cunningham-Reid, UK Head of Corporate Affairs commented: “Once again JTI has demonstrated its commitment to take action against retailers found to be selling illegal tobacco. Our action, supporting those of law enforcement agencies, serves as a warning to any retailer tempted to sell illegal tobacco products.”

This action brings the total number of gantries removed by JTI from retailers punished for selling illegal tobacco to 31.

Cunningham-Reid added: “JTI calls on other category partners in the distribution chain to join us by withdrawing their support from any retailer who sells illegal tobacco.”

To protect their business any retailer who knows of criminals supplying illegal cigarettes in their area should contact the HMRC Fraud Hotline on 0800 788 887, Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or Trading Standards 03454 04 05 06.
