McVitie’s celebrates Harry and Meghan’s big day with a limited edition, American-inspired Chocolate Digestive

McVitie’s has created a limited edition ‘transatlantic’ biscuit to mark the Royal Wedding on 19th May, bringing the nation’s favourite biscuit, the Chocolate Digestive, together with a classic all-American flavour, chocolate fudge brownie – because they really are Sweeter Together.

Last month, nearly 70,000 biscuit lovers voted for their favourite all-American flavour via a McVitie’s Twitter poll. Chocolate fudge brownie topped the list (52% of the votes), beating other classic American flavours including:

  • Mississippi Mud Pie (23%)
  • Peanut Butter & Jelly (12%)
  • Pecan Pie (12%)

Like every good romance, this was just the start of the journey…

The team at McVitie’s top-secret Research & Development Centre worked day and night to perfect the winning flavour into a recipe. The new transatlantic inspired biscuit combines the popular classic McVitie’s Chocolate Digestives recipe with the addition of fudge pieces, cocoa and brownie flavouring to the digestive biscuit base, before enrobing it with the infamous chocolate topping.

Gareth Payne, Lead Product Design Manager at pladis, the snacking company behind McVitie’s, said: “When a biscuit is as well-known and loved as the McVitie’s Chocolate Digestive, developing a new flavour is never as simple as it seems! We started with nearly 20 recipe ideas, and afterfive rounds of taste tests, sampling over 200 biscuits, a dash of McVitie’s creativity and a little tinkering, we finally landed on a combination of ingredients to create the delicious new, exclusive biscuit.”

Just 50 packs of the limited edition** McVitie’s Chocolate Fudge Brownie Digestives will be available for lucky Royal fans to win via McVitie’s Twitter channel in the lead up to the big day.

Emma Stowers, Brand Director for McVitie’s said: “We’re very proud of our history of baking wedding cakes for the Royals in the past and wanted to mark the upcoming national occasion with something extra special.

Inviting our fans to help us create a limited-edition biscuit that brings together a British staple with a classic American twist is a first for us, and we’re thrilled with the result! We’ve delivered a few packs to Clarence House – and hope that Harry and Meghan find some time to enjoy them whilst relaxing with a cup of tea after all the excitement and rush of their big day.”

In 1947, McVitie and Price created (then) Princess Elizabeth and Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten’s (HRH the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh’s) spectacular, nine-feet high wedding cake and, in 2017 created a cake to mark their 70th wedding anniversary. McVitie’s was also chosen inn 2011, to make Prince William’s groom’s cake made of 1,700 Rich Tea biscuits and 17kg (37lbs) of chocolate.

For a chance to win the exclusive special edition packs, biscuit lovers can visit McVitie’s Twitter channel and enter from 14th-18th May.
