SPAR supports charity cycling duo on Tandem LEJOG
SPAR stores and wholesalers across the country will support two tutu-wearing tandem cyclists on their way from Land’s End to John O’Groats as they raise money for charity.
Suzy Cramb and Debbie Edge, from Wirral, will set off on their Tandem LEJOG from Land’s End on 7th June to start the 1,100-mile bike ride, which will take them 13 days, arriving at John O’Groats on 19th June.
SPAR and James Hall & Co, the SPAR wholesaler for the north of England, will sponsor the tandem ride by offering them lunch, drinks and energy bars at stores along the route.
The women will be raising cash for two charities, the Teenage Cancer Trust and the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust. Both charities gave Suzy incredible support when her son was diagnosed with osteosarcoma and treated at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.
“The work that the Teenage Cancer Trust does to transform cancer units around the country is incredible – they turn teenage cancer wards into lovely, happy places where all the family can stay,” said Suzy. “The staff there are absolutely amazing.”
Following Suzy’s son’s treatment for osteosarcoma, the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust also gave him a fantastic week away. “Cancer can strip away so much from a young person, and the sailing trips the charity gives them does an amazing job of giving them their confidence back,” said Suzy.
The team has already raised £8,500 for the two charities through online sponsorship, and they’re hoping to raise a lot more.
Peter Dodding, Sales and Marketing Director at James Hall & Co, said: “We are delighted to be supporting Debbie and Suzy on their tandem LEJOG – tutus and all!
“At SPAR, we are passionate about working together to support local causes.
“Thanks to our wholesale partners Appleby Westward, AF Blakemore and CJ Lang & Son and our strong network of entrepreneurial local retailers spanning the length and breadth of the UK, we’ve been able to help support the fantastic tandem ride that Suzy and Debbie are setting off on,” he said.
“Our sponsorship of Debbie and Suzy truly shows the power of what can happen when local convenience stores come together with a shared goal.”
“SPAR and James Hall & Co have been an absolute godsend for us – they are providing us with sustenance the whole way up the country,” said Debbie. “We are really looking forward to having all the retailers involved – and we’re even bringing tutus for them all to try on!”
“Neither of us has ever cycled this far before, so we’re both training really hard,” added Debbie.
To stay in sync with the tutu theme and to encourage people to get involved, Debbie and Suzy have created a text for donations, ‘Text Tutu81 to 70070’, and two Twitter hashtags: #Give2Toots4TeenageCancer and #gottabebonkers.
